Distracted Driving Law

The Northbridge Police Department would like to remind students that the “Distracted Driving Law” concerning the use of “mobile phones and texting” while operating a motor vehicle took effect on September 30, 2010.  This law is especially important to motor vehicle operator’s under the age of 18 who cannot operate any electronic device while operating a motor vehicle.

No person under 18 years of age shall use a mobile telephone, hands free mobile telephone or mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle.  Violation of this law will result in a $100.00 fine & 60 day suspension of the operator’s license.

No operator of a motor vehicle shall use a mobile telephone, or any handheld device capable of accessing the internet, to manually compose, send or read an electronic message while operating a motor vehicle.  Violation of this law will result in a $100.00 fine.

Exceptions to the law exist for emergency purposes.
