Bi-Monthly Updates

Monday, 11/7 Update

Good morning, parents/guardians!

Here are your language arts updates!

First, I just want to say how impressed I was with the quality and effort that was demonstrated in the first independent reading projects.  The students did some incredible work, and I'm so proud of them!  They will be getting their grades back today.

One thing I always like to encourage students and parents to do is to feel comfortable questioning grades.  Mistakes do happen, either on quizzes, tests, projects, report cards, and even though we try to be accurate and thorough to avoid any errors, they do happen, so please never hesitate to question something if it looks off.

Next, in language arts, students are going to be introduced to their final project (known as a C.E.P.A.) for module 1.  For this assignment, students are going to be asked to select one "episode" from the novel we've completed, Abel's Island, revise it, create a script for it, and "produce" it into an episode via video, live skit, or storyboard.  This assignment is assessing various standards that were taught and worked with in module 1.

For this C.E.P.A., students will have the option to complete it with a group (no more than 4 members in a group).  They may also opt to work independently.  Students have been cautioned to choose partners wisely and to be aware that if they are working in groups, they will likely have to get together outside of school to complete the work.  I'd recommend checking in with your child to see what he/she plans to do.

Finally, students should be making a selection for their term 2 independent reading book.  As before, they need to select an age-appropriate book that interests them.  There is no specific genre or topic.

That's all for today!  I hope everyone has a great day.  Expect your next update on 11/21.
