Northbridge High School to Induct 13 into Athletic Hall of Fame

Northbridge—Twelve outstanding athletes dating from 1940’s through the 90’s along with a standout men’s coach, will be inducted into the Northbridge High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 3, 2010.

Established in 1993, the Northridge High School Athletic Hall of Fame continues to recognize and honor athletes, coaches, and individuals who have contributed to the rich tradition of Northridge High School athletics.

The NHS Athletic Hall of Fame Committee will host the 12th induction ceremony beginning with a social hour at 5 p.m. followed by dinner and the induction ceremony at 7 p.m. in the Northbridge High School Auditorium.

The thirteen individuals who will be inducted are: Fred Rondeau, Class of 1941; William Viestra, Class of 1957; Beverley (Farrand) Paille, Class of 1961; George Hamm, Class of 1966; John Doldoorian, Jr., Class of 1974; Dirk Koopman, Class of 1981; Matt Leonard, Class of 1989; Anthony Altieri, Class of 1995; Jeffrey Altieri, Class of 1999; Rick Asadoorian, Class of 1999; Kara (Massey) Francis, Class of 2000; Lee Anne (Stanovich) Blanding, Class of 2000; and Donald Katz, longtime multi-sport coach during the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. The thirteen new members will bring the Hall of Fame membership to 102.

Tickets to the event are $40 and may be obtained by contacting Northbridge High School Principal Michael Gauthier as well as NPS Athletic Director, Allan Richards at 508-234-6221.

NHS is highlighted in High School Today, a publication of the National Federation of State High School Associations

The article, “From Postgame Rituals to Pep Songs, High School Traditions Stand theTest of Time” highlights the Northbridge High School Band and Jimmy Verdone, first year music teacher and Band Director. The article is published on pages 14 & 15 of the February 2010 edition of High School Today.

March is Youth Art Month

March is Youth Art Month, in celebration of this six students artwork was selected to be displayed at the Worcester Art Museum as part of the Youth Art Month Exhibit. Congratulations to Brainna Bouthillette, James Sabatino, Katie Duvernay, Chelsea Harrington, Dillon Caya, and Maria Monterotti for being selected. There will be a Teen Night Reception on March 18th from 6:00-8:00pm.

Northbridge Field House Open to Community Members Starting Monday, February 22, 2010

The Northbridge Public Schools and Northbridge High School are proud to announce public access to Veteran’s Memorial Field House for walking or jogging exercises in the early morning. The Field House will be open from 6:00 a.m. until 7:00 a.m. on Monday-Friday for Northbridge citizens that are 21 years of age and older and who choose to walk or jog the track in lieu of walking/jogging outside in the cold or inclement weather. The Northbridge Field House is open to Northbridge community members only.

This is a pilot program through April 30, 2010. The first day the Field House will be open is Monday February 22, 2010. All community members must sign in and out of the Field House. The Field House will be closed promptly at 7:00 a.m. Please note that visitors are not allowed in any areas of the high school other than the Field House. The weight room or the cardio equipment are not open to the public. Access is strictly limited to the Field House. The entrance on the east side of the Field House will be open—not the front door of the high school. The Field House will not be open during school vacations, holidays, snow days or when the opening of school is delayed.

Northbridge High School Credit Recovery Courses

Credit recovery courses are designed to give students who have lost credits, and are in danger of not graduating, additional options for recovering some or all of the credits they need to reach the credit requirement for graduation. These courses do not have any bearing on the required courses for graduation and can not be used to replace a required course. All courses are $75 per 1.25 credit course. Student Screenings

According to new Department of Public Health guidelines, students in grades 1, 4, 7 and 10 will be screened for height, weight, and Body Mass Index. Parents will receive the results of these screenings, along with an explanation of what the results mean. Parents and guardians who wish to waive this screening may do so in writing to their childs's school nurse.

Applications for the following local scholarships are available in the guidance office:

  • Uxbridge Rotary Club Scholarship- ($2,000)- financial need, scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities and work experience - Application deadline is March 19, 2010
  • Greater Worcester Community Foundation - (from $250 to over $5,000) - apply for more than 100 scholarships through one application. Three of these scholarships are designated for Northbridge High School graduates. Information to download application form is available in guidance - Application deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 22, 2010
  • Whitinsville Woman's Club Scholarships (3 @ $1,000) - Must be a 2010 graduate and a resident of Northbridge - Application deadline March 23, 2010
  • Milford Federal Savings and Loan Association - ($1,000) - exceptional achievement, character and involved in school and community activities - Application deadline is March 25, 2010.
  • Donald K. Lange & Elinor H. Lange Scholarship (1@$1,000) - must be a 2010 Northbridge High School graduate -essay regarding major in college and reason for choosing that major - Application deadline March 25, 2010
  • Ronald P. Safer Memorial Scholarship - ($1,000) - Essay question: "What does commitment mean to you?" - Application deadline is April 5, 2010.
  • Yvette Manosh Scholarship - ($1,000) - must be a resident of Northbridge, GPA of 3.0, must demonstrate sufficient financial need - Application deadline is April 5, 2010
  • Paul David Woodman Jr. Scholarship ($1,500) - This scholarship is restricted to a NHS basketball player - Application deadline is April 5, 2010
  • Heather Ann Kacmarcik Memorial Scholarship ($1,000 each - one male and one female) - essay regarding safe driving as a newly licensed motor vehicle operator- Application deadline is April 5, 2010.
  • Edward L. Riley Memorial Scholarship ($2,000) - essay "What obstacles have you overcome to graduate from high schol, and what further obstacles do you need to overcome in order to attend college?" - Application deadline is April 5,2010.
  • Michael Bednarczyk Memorial Scholarship - ($600 - student must be pursuing a music major of minor in colleege in the fall and/or involved in the NHS music program during their high school carreer - Esay required: Explain the importance of music in your life.- Application deadline is April 5, 2010
  • Worcester County Educational Secretaries Associaiton - ($500) - must be accepted into an accredited program leading to a degree in the secretarial sciences and/or business field - Applications deadline is April 16, 2010
  • Unibank Scholarship - ($2,000) - Must be a 2009 graduate, must be involved in school or community activities, financial need and academic performance - Application deadline April 16, 2010
  • Brittany Irene Norcross Memorial Scholarship (2@ $250) - essay of 200 words,"How does the consumption of alcohol affect judgement?"-Application deadline is April 16, 2010

If you have any questions please contact your child’s principal. Student safety is our first priority, thank you in advance for your support and understanding. Please make sure that your child does not come to school prior to the time the school doors are open. We do not want students standing outside our schools during the winter.

The Link Crew high school transition program provides the structure for freshmen to receive support and guidance from juniors and seniors who have been through the challenges that high school poses, and understand that the transition to a larger school can sometimes be overwhelming. School Council

The School Council is created to meet the provisions of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 71, Section 53 (also known as the Education Reform Act of 1993). The Northbridge High School Council membership consists of the Principal, parent/guardian, teachers, students and community representatives. Individuals interested in serving on School Council may inquire by contacting the Principal’s office. The primary responsibilities of the NHS School Council are to assist and advise the Principal in the following areas:

  • Adopting educational goals for the school
  • Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
  • Reviewing the school’s handbook
  • Reviewing the school’s annual budget
  • Formulating a school improvement plan

What is MassCore?

The 2009-2010 Program of Studies Guide is aligned with the Department of Education's newly proposed MassCore. The MassCore is a new policy designed to increase college and career readiness through the completion of a standardized secondary program of study.
